USDA Rural Youth Development: Engaging Youth Serving Communities (EYSC)

Project Accomplishments and Community Impact

Forums

To better understand the issues facing our community, Youth In Governance core team members have held three community forums. Here, we were able to see what was important to the citizens of Crete, both young and old. Using the results from these meetings, we were able to identify six top priorities for the people of Crete:

  1. Safe walking/hiking trails;
  2. Community recreation center;
  3. Cultural understanding and education;
  4. Expanded activities for youth;
  5. Sidewalks; and
  6. Reduction of illegal drug use and vandalism.

Accomplishments

So far, our team has begun diligent work on our five priorities for the town of Crete.

  • Walking Trails -- Access to the Crete Middle School from nearby residential areas pass through densely wooded areas which students use every day to go to and from school. Our group planned lighting for the trail and also coordinated the construction of a foot-bridge to ensure the safety of students.  We also planted bushes at the base of each of the light poles to help deter future graffiti artists.

  • Welcome To Crete Video -- Because cultural understanding and education were also a top priority, our team is currently working on the development of an informational video that will be shown to new families coming into Crete. Not only will this video illustrate what Crete is all about, it will help new residents learn how to utilize the services Crete offers for families to the best of their abilities.

  • Olive Creek Recycling -- At Olive Creek, pollution of the water because of abandoned fishing line was identified as a problem. The team quickly implemented a successful solution, providing fishing line recycling containers for public use.
